On Monday, 2 September 2024, Sumit Antil made history and gave an unmatched performance in the men’s javelin throw F64 class at the Paris Paralympics.
He became the first Indian para-athlete to win gold while defending his title.
26-year-old Antil made a new paralympic record of 70.59m at the Stade de France.
Before giving his finest performance, Sumit’s previous attempt placed him at 69.11m, setting a world record.
In his second attempt, he went to defend his own title at 70.59m. This was the best attempt in the history of the Paralympics. At last, he stood comfortably at the top of the standings.
In a single tournament, India’s Sumit Antil broke the Paralympic World record three times, showcasing his unbelievably heroic skills.
What Happened One Night Before the Game?
One night before his performance, Sumit Antil was arguably stressed and nervous. He experienced a lack of sleep due to a persistent back injury.
His worries were put to rest when India’s Javelin hero and Olympic silver medalist Neeraj Chopra raised the athlete’s spirits by sending him a message filled with motivation, assurance and advice.
Chopra told Antil to “stay focused and don’t try anything new”.

Post his legendary win, Sumit Antil expressed his gratitude towards Neeraj Chopra. He also expressed his aspirations and said “I was hoping to break the world record, but it’s good to have the Paralympic record.”
The brilliant player wishes to touch 80m once in his life. Additionally, he aspires to break the overall world record for the Javelin throw.
Sri Lanka’s D. Kodithuwakku and Australia’s M. Burian stood in second and third position respectively.
India’s Sandeep Chaudhary categorized in F44 competed in the javelin throw and stood at 62.80 m. He is a track and field athlete from Rajasthan.

Born on 7th June 1998, Sumit Antil wanted to pursue wrestling and get enrolled in the Indian Army.
His dreams were shattered after a life-altering accident in 2015 led to his leg being amputated.
Sumit saw the light again when another para-athlete, Rajkamur introduced him to para-athletics.
This was the start of his journey into creating history.
India at the Paris Paralympic 2024
India’s performance at the Paris Paralympics 2024 has been commendable. 2024 marks our best-ever medal haul in a single edition of the Paralympics.
At the moment, we have 20 medals including 3 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze medals. This year we have surpassed our performance at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
