The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games (28 August 2024 to 8 September 2024) are underway, and the latest news highlights some thrilling moments and remarkable achievements across various sports.
Let’s look at some achievements and latest information at the seventeenth Summer Paralympic Games.
Wheelchair Rugby
In Wheelchair Rugby also known as murderball, the U.S. team, led by athlete Chuck Aoki, secured a narrow victory over Canada, with a final score of 51-48.
This match was particularly historic as it featured Sarah Adam, the first woman from the USA ever to play for the wheelchair rugby team at the Paralympics.
Although, the game has had a co-ed format since the year 2000.
Sarah’s six tries made her the third-leading scorer for the team, marking an impressive debut.
Wheelchair Basketball
Wheel chair basketball also saw Team USA off to a strong start, with a 66-56 win against Spain.
Two-time Paralympic gold-medalist Steve Serio‘s triple-double performance was a highlight, contributing significantly to the team’s victory as they aim for their third consecutive Paralympic title.
Para Swimming
In the pool, Para Swimmers from Team USA made a splash on the first day of competition. Elizabeth Anne Marks won the first U.S. medal, a silver in the women’s 50m freestyle S6.
Christie Raleigh Crossley set a world record in the prelims of the women’s 50m freestyle S10 and later secured a silver medal in the final.
Grace Nuhfer added to the medal count with a silver in the women’s 100m butterfly S13, rounding off a successful day for the U.S. team in swimming.
As the Games continue, there are still many exciting events to look forward to, including blind football at the iconic Eiffel Tower Stadium, Para-triathlon at Pont Alexandre III, and Wheelchair Rugby finals at Stade de France
India at the Paralympics 2024
India had a remarkable second day at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, wrapping up the day with four medals—one gold, one silver, and two bronze.
With these wins, India now stands at 17th in the overall medal tally and is on track to meet the target of 25 medals, as predicted by Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) chief Devendra Jhajharia before the games began.
The day kicked off with Avani Lekhara, the reigning Paralympic world champion, asserting her dominance in shooting by securing her second consecutive gold medal in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event.
Avani made history as the first Indian woman para-athlete to achieve this feat, scoring 249.7 in the finals and breaking her own Paralympic Games record of 249.6, which she set in Tokyo.
